Welcome back to another ESL podcast, everyone! This is going to be a short one, but so many of my students have asked me about the differences between another and other. Here’s the breakdown of it.
Other can be an adjective or a noun. Only the noun can be plural.
I prefer the other book. / I like this book better than the other (noun) / the others (plural noun).
Another can be a determiner or a pronoun. Only the determiner is followed by a noun.
I’d like another ( determiner) book. / May I have another (pronoun)?
Each other and one another refer to two or more people at the same time.
Use each other for two people, and one another for more than two:
The two students exchanged papers with each other.
The children gave gifts to one another. (We know there are three or more children).
