We’re heading into the next phase of pronunciation!

  • Each thought group has a key word called the focus word.
  • How English speakers signal focus words.

Thought groups have unstressed structure words and stressed content words. One of the stressed words in each though group is more important than others. It is called the focus word. The focus word is most noticeable, “ear-catching” word in every thought group.

Some of my BEST FRIENDS / are people in my class.

Being able to recognize focus words is a major part of effective listening. And being able to signal focus words is an essential part of clear speaking.
