Stephen Covey: Force Field Analysis – Restraining Forces vs. Driving Forces

Sociologist Kurt Lewin developed a “Force Field Analysis” model in which he described any current level of performance or being as a state of equilibrium between the driving forces that encourage upward movement and the restraining forces that discourse it.

So, in dumb English, driving forces are generally positive, reasonable, logical, conscious, and economic.

Restraining forces are often negative, emotional, illogical, unconscious, and social/psychological.  Most need to be taken into account when dealing with change.

In a family, you have a climate at home.  What does that mean? Well, look at your family, for instance.  Are they generally happy or constantly complaining? The examples I’ve used in the past about my family have been spot on.  It’s terrifying to even read this part of Stephen Covey’s book, cringing at every sentence and face-palming myself because of the super negative environment I was in.

Some of you might feel safe or unsafe when expressing feelings.  Kind of like that stern father in the movie Fences who was just so bold, strong, and assertive.

Going back to my family, there could be a level of respect; me always showing respect to my mother and never talking back, or disrespect – my brother constantly disrespecting my mother verbally.

You’re going to have to change that level.  You may want to create a climate that’s more positive in general…..respectful.  Something that’s more open and trusting.

Increasing the driving forces, however, are not enough.  Your efforts are opposed by restraining forces – by the competitive spirit between children in the family…as Stephen Covey says.

It could also be habits, demands by work, or anything that requires a lot of energy.

Increasing the driving forces could absolutely bring results – for a while.  However, restraining forces are still there and it’s just going to get harder.

So, Stephen Covey talks about creating Synergy.  This creates an atmosphere where you feel safe about talking about these forces.  You can create insights.  You can involve people in a problem, immerse them in it, so that they soak and feel it as their problem and they tend to become an important part of the solution.

When you do all of this, new goals and shared goals are created.  Everything begins to move in a positive directions.  It can ultimately create a new culture in your house.

Summary of Principles Involved In Accurate Thinking

So, to break down this entire chapter of accurate thinking, we now know that the body is not singular, but plural – that it consists of billions on top of billions of living, intelligent, individual cells.  With organised work, they’re able to maintain this spectacular being called the human body.

These cells have their respective outings such as the actions of the subconscious mind or automatic action of the mind; and the subconscious section of the mind controlled and directed by the conscious.

In other words, the habits, actions, and involuntary affirmations done over time becomes imbedded into our subconscious.

The Value of Adopting A Chief-Aim

These lessons and podcasts on Accurate Thought not only describes the real purpose of a definite chief aim, but it explains in simple terms the principles on how it could be realized. Create that objectives first…the one which you’re striving for.  Outline, in great detail, all the objectives on a piece of paper and create a definite statement of it in the nature of a definite chief aim. By referencing it everyday, you will hand it over to the subconscious mind – which will ultimately transform the desire into material form. Podcasts down below in following your definite chief-aim.

Instructions For Applying Your Definite Chief-Aim

You need to build upon a deeply seat, strong desire for the object of your chief-aim.  Do not “wish,” because “wish” is a future conditional indicating that it’s in the future and you’ll never possess it.  Having a strong desire of achievement is far more powerful because you’re devoting all your energy into the universe into the attainment of that objective.

Suggestion & Auto-Suggestion

The impressions that are in one’s environment dictates what the paradigm/subconscious is.  It could be statements, facts, T.V., parents, news, friends…..suggestions are given continuously all day, every day.  These influences have control over us.  It’s entirely up to YOU to control what suggestions/auto-suggestions you want to accept.  Be very wary of who you’re around and especially the environment you’re in because it cultivates that mental faculty, regardless if you like it or not.

Napoleon Hill’s Accurate Thought: Part III

The man who knows that he is working with facts goes at his task with a feeling of self-confidence which enables him to refrain from hesitating or waiting to make sure of his ground.  He already knows what his efforts will be.

Also, the man who has learned of the advantages of searching for facts as the foundation of his thinking will go a long way toward the development of one of the most important facets of humanity: accurate thought. On top of that, a man who can separate facts from important and unimportant will go even further.

For instance, John D. Rockefeller was a man who created a habit of dealing only with relevant facts that pertained to his life-work.  When he was young, he was a very poor young men.  However, at that same time, he adopted the definite chief aim of accumulating great wealth.  A lot of people would say that Rockefeller was not always fair with his competitors – which may or may not be true.  On there other hand, no one ever accused him of “snap-judgements” or underestimating the strength of his competitors.  He not only recognised facts that affected his business, wherever or whenever he found them, but he made it his business to search for them until he found them.

Thomas A. Edison was another man who attained greatness through the classification and relevance of facts.  “Mr. Edison worked with natural laws as his chief aids; therefore, he must be sure of his facts before he can harness those laws.” – Napoleon Hill.

Every time you hear a phonograph, remember that Edison is the man that made it happen, through his persistent habit of dealing with relevant facts.  Every time you see a moving picture, know that it was him.

The exact opposite of this would mean you focusing on mere information that you cannot control.  Not being able to separate importance with unimportance will cloud your vision completely.

If you haven’t already seen the important of creating a definite chief aim as the object of your lifework, you will undoubtedly do so by going all the way to the blog at the very beginning of this book or by listening to this podcast down below.

The subconscious mind has one outstanding characteristic to which I will now direct your attention; namely it records the suggestions which you send it through Auto-suggestion, and it invokes the aid of infinite intelligence in translating these suggestions into their natural physical form, through natural means which are in no way out of the ordinary.

The subconscious mind accepts all suggestions, whether they are constructive or destructive.  The subconscious mind may be likened to the sensitive plate of a camera which the picture of any object placed before the camera will be recorded.  The plate of the camera does not choose the sort of picture to be recorded on it, it records anything which reaches it through the lens.

Today’s Podcast

Transcending Those Limiting Beliefs

“Your subconscious mind does not argue with you.  It accepts what your conscious mind decrees.  If you say, “I can’t afford it,” your subconscious mind works to make it true.  Select a better thought.  Decree, “I will buy it.  I accept it in my mind.”

Dr. Joseph Murphy –

Like what I’ve said in my Lisa Nichols podcasts, our beliefs, especially from when we were young, really control what’s going on today.  It could be beliefs about our own capabilities, belief about what it takes to success, beliefs about how we relate with other people, or common everyday beliefs that we see or live by.  Identify those limiting beliefs (Lisa Nichols – https://www.spreaker.com/episode/10255673) and replace them with positive ones that support your success.

What Are Some of Those Limiting Beliefs?

  • I’m not (smart, attractive, rich, old, or young) enough.
  • I’m not worthy.
  • I’m not lovable.
  • Life is hard until you die.
  • Nothing I do is right.
  • You can’t get rich in this profession.
  • There’s aren’t any good men left in this world.

I recall Tony Robbins talking about how severely paid teachers are in America, and then he went on to speak about a Korean American teacher who went from making 60k USD a year to 4 million…just by destroying that limiting belief of you can’t get rich in this profession.

How To Overcome Any Limiting Belief

  1. Identify the limiting belief that you want to change.  Make a list of all of them that are limiting you.  Invite a couple friends over who would also like to accelerate their growth to join you to brainstorm a list of all the things you hear growing up.
  • Money doesn’t grow on trees.
  • Can’t you do anything right?
  • Eat everything on your plate.
  • Act like a lady.
  • People aren’t interested in your problems.

When you’re finished making this list, pick a belief that is still limiting you and take yourself through the remaining steps of the process.

2. Determine how the beliefs limit you.

3. Decide how you would rather be, act, or feel.

4. Create a turnaround statement that affirms or gives you permission to be, act, or feel this new way.

For example:

  1. My negative limiting belief is Thai women hate black men because that’s what I’ve seen my entire life living out here in Thailand.
  2. The way this limits me is I put every human being of the opposite sex in the same category and that’s called generalizing.  It’s untrue that ALL women hate black men.
  3. The way I want to feel is I need to love myself for who I am and what I look like.  The only person that’s creating this reality is me, and if I continue to say something that’s not true, it will continue to happen.  I want to have smiles directed towards me and women talk to me with no race attached to it.
  4. My turnaround statement Thai women absolutely adore and love black men, including myself.

This is one of the most significant limiting beliefs that somewhat lingers in my mind from time-to-time.  This is also an example of what your statement will look like.  My colleague and I will do a podcast of this within the next couple of weeks so you can hear how it works.

Self-Confidence Formula

First: I know that I have the ability to achieve the object of my definite purpose, therefore, I demand of myself persistent, aggressive and continuous action toward its attainment.

Second: I realize that the dominating thoughts of my mind eventually reproduce themselves in outward, bodily action, and gradually transform themselves into physical reality, therefore I will concentrate my mind for thirty minutes daily upon the task of thinking of the person I intent to be, by reading a mental picture of this person and then transforming that picture into reality through practice service.

Third: I know that through the principle of auto-suggestion, any desire that I persistently hold in my mind will eventually seek expression through some practical means of realizing it, therefore I shall devote ten minutes daily to demanding of myself the development factors that I want to attain.

Fourth: I have clearly amped out and written down a description of my definite purpose in life, for the coming five years.  I have set a price on my services for each of these five years; a price that I intend to earn and receive, through strict application of the principle of efficient, satisfactory service which I will render in advance.

Fifth: I fully realize that no wealth or position can long endure unless built upon truth and justice, therefore I will engage in no transition which does not benefit all whom it affects.  I will succeed by attracting to me the forces I wish to use, and the co-operation of other people.  I will induce others to serve me because I will first serve them.  I will eliminate hatred, envy, jealousy, selfishness and cynicism by developing love for all humanity because I know that a negative attitude toward others can never bring me success.  I will cause others to believe in me because I will believe in them and in myself.

I will sign my name to this formula, commit it to memory and repeat it aloud once a day with full faith that it will gradually influence my entire life so that I will become a success and happy worker in my chosen field of endeavour.

Before you sign your name on this formula (copy and past on microsoft word), make sure you intend on carrying out its instructions.

If you fill your mind with doubt and unbelief in your ability to achieve, then the principle of Auto-suggestion takes this spirit of unbelief and sets it up in your subconscious mind as your dominating thought and slowly but surely draws you into the whirlpool of failure.

However, if you feel your mind with self-confidence, the principle of Auto-suggestion takes this belief and sets it up as your dominating thought and helps you master the obstacles that fall in your way until you reach the mountain-top of success.
