Coaching Session 003: Being Creative

So, I was asked this fascinating question just recently by one of my content writers.  She asked me how to be creative and how we can continue being creative.  Well, we’re living in a world that’s changing literally every year, month, week, day.  The YouTube’s and Apple’s of the world can ultimately fall apart just as Toys R Us and other massive chains in different countries plummeted.  Well, if we take a look at my ESL podcast and how I’ve been teaching in Thailand, this is probably the only way I can relate to this post.

The Initiation

When I first moved to Thailand, I was making a sloppy $600 USD a month.  Now, the teacher told me I would get paid $66 dollars less because I was black, too.  What was I doing at this school? Teaching younger kids — which required a lot of creativity.  That’s basically it. For five months I didn’t have any personal development and didn’t try learning useful skills that will make me a hot commodity.

Second Job

I moved up to $1000 dollars a month, which is an 80% increase, teaching technical college students.  Did I learn anything while I was there? Absolutely not…but with 5 months experience, this gave me a significant pay raise that I never thought I would get.

The Reality

When I finally moved outside of Bangkok, not only did I make 2k USD a month, but I first taught TOEIC (a test preparation course to enable the student to apply for higher paying jobs based on their English language literacy).  I learned to teach 4-skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening), academic writing, IELTS, business English and other facets.  When they saw I was an excellent speaker, they wanted me to create a new course that catered to conversation, which was a success beyond a success.  I got gigs teaching at the top-5 companies within these borders (email writing, business English and other areas), and when this happened, jealousy began growing.

Then I knew I was on the right path. The more I learned, the more I earn.

In 2015, I created a YouTube video that now has over 9k views…..never did I think that would happen.  It wasn’t until earlier this year that I had the idea, “hey, if there are lots of people viewing my videos YouTube, how about I make a podcast and see where it goes? Bingo! From there, my podcast soared over the last couple of months.  I began creating 1-minute videos on Instagram and my Facebook page — resulting in BIG HITS.  I turned that into online coaching, which I do live on the weekends and set up the refreshment course via YouTube.

And Then

A coach for Toyota, who has traveled the world and who I’ve been teaching the past three weeks (TOEFL) spoke to me for twenty minutes at the end of class saying, “you have e-test, e-learning, coaching, and refreshing).  While he was talking to me, I realized that I was unconsciously doing two of them already (coaching and refreshing) and it has been STELLAR since beginning two weeks ago.

The Creative

If I can create an e-test for my students and provide specialized courses in the different sectors of English, this could be the new-age part of learning.  If you haven’t already heard, universities are 1 trillion in debt and now people are realizing that university, is indeed, a scam.  In ten years time, we could be learning in virtual reality.  The language centers here in Thailand and all over the world, which are my competitors, can no longer provide a book and a “teacher” to teach from a book (super easy to do). They’ll have to become more creative.

So, how do I stay relevant? Integration of sophisticated lessons that will capture the imaginations of my students, making them better members of society while focusing on their core genius.  Professors around the world teach what’s only in books, and that will all be gone once AI is implemented and we no longer need to memorize information that’s useless.

Being creative is doing exactly what the big companies, which have failed, didn’t do.  Continue evolving and providing your customers with more things and innovate your technology to make life easier.  Jack Ma says “find a need and fill it.”

If you had known about Buzzsprout in the beginning of the year, you would know how garbage it was.  This platform, which podcasters can use to host, was completely useless compared to SoundCloud (a now “pay for plays” platform).  I didn’t know the metrics, who was listening, the last x amount of plays, or ANYTHING.  It was generic as hell compared to sites like Spreaker — a site I can see all the sources on.  However, I’m able to schedule my ESL podcasts now, transcript for little to no money (compared to hosting sites which charge 10x more), and I can put chapter markers in my podcast — a feature that has been invented on any other platform.

Buzzsprout knows in order for it to stay afloat, it has to continue evolving. The moment it began to grow complacent (at the beginning of the year), that was beginning of its downfall.

Always continue making life easier for your customers. Period.

Stephen Covey’s Speed of Trust: Season 4 – Episode 3 – A Summary of Taxes & Dividends

The Trust Tax.  Yes, sometimes there are hidden, ugly variables in that, too.

It’s very difficult to trust people who work for different companies, such as those exploitative companies that tell you, “hey! You can stay at our beautiful condominium for cheap tonight with no extra costs!”

If you guys didn’t hear the story about 1.5 years ago, here’s a snippet of it.

A friend and I walked into this touristy place on a cold Sedona morning and this guy gave us an offer that we couldn’t refuse.  However, I scratched the back part of my mind and knew there was always condition.  He stood right  before our eyes and told us that we can stay at this beautiful condominium for half the price and take a 20$ helicopter ride, only if we visit a timeshare the next day.

If you guys aren’t aware of timeshares, they have an abominable name and I’m still unaware of what they are…but let’s just say an extortionate scheme played by individuals to get you to pay less, but in hidden print, you’re paying 300% more.

We looked at the contract and my friend asked me, “be real, this is all we have to pay? We won’t be forced to buy anything?” We were at this place trying to get directions to gorgeous hiking places and we almost had our lives turned right upside down.  He said all we needed was a credit card to hold $200.  It would later be released.

When this conversation was going, two ladies next to us went up in arms and became defensive about their situation: “NO! We don’t want that. We’ll leave now. We want only this and that’s enough.  If not, we’re leaving.” These women were beyond aggressive; meanwhile, I tapped my friend on the leg and gestured to that situation and wrote on my phone (under the table), “this guy is trying to f*** us.”

Sure enough, the payment for the credit card never went through because my friend only had $200 on the card, the guy had three hidden fees totaling out to about $800 dollars.

Lesson learned. The measurable economics of trust could be unbelievably deceiving.  This man, who apparently has a family, would push a narrative to argue with people everyday? Just a sad life.  But just like Thailand, places similar to what I’ve just talked about do exist.

My brother, who I’ve talked about so many times, always felt the need to win.  He would have this overbearing voice while yelling at the top of his voice to shoot a point across.  I would sit back, relaxed, and just retort before he does it again. He was one of the people who thought winning arguments were critical and it made him feel more superior, especially over his younger brother.

Men, what have you been avoiding to focus on your physical appearance? I’m asking this because most body builders are very ego-maniacal, self-centered and anti-social.  These are the factors you can work on to rip this athlete mask off.

1.Health: mental, physical, emotional
2.Relationships: intimate, family, friends
3.Wealth: finances, career, education, business
4.Contribution: making an impact in the world and other people’s lives, being of service
5.Spiritual: connecting to a higher power or your spiritual beliefs.

Rate yourself in each area.  What would you look like in each area? Write these down in a notebook of some sort.

Also, what are your values and principles that you can lean on so that you can figure out how to contribute to the world, and to your own happiness, in each of these areas?”

Jack Canfield – Have A Heart Talk

“Most communication resembles a Ping-Pong game in which people are merely preparing to slam their next point across; but pausing to understand differing points of view and associated feelings can turn apparent opponents into true member of the same team.” – Cliff Durfee

Jack Canfield said in his book, “unfortunately, in too many business, educational, and other settings, there is never an opportunity for feelings to be expressed and hear, so they build up to the point that people have no capacity to focus on the business at hand.”

This happened at a number of places I work in the past.  A group of people sitting in a group pointing fingers and not taking the blame.  No solutions.  Not everyone got to talk.  Just a lot of arguing and crying.

People just can’t listen until they have been heard. So, I thought making a podcast and describing in detail what a “heart talk” is could help you in your personal lives.

A Heart Talk is a structured communication process in which eight agreements are strictly adhered. It creates a safe environment for communication to occur – without the fear of interruption or being rushed.  It’s also great to release suppressed emotions that could otherwise get in the way of business.

When To Use It

  • Before or during a staff meeting.
  • At the beginning of a business meeting where two new groups of people are coming together for the first time.
  • After an emotionally stimulating event like a merger, a massive layoff, a death, a major athletic loss, or even the terrorist attacks of 9/11.
  • Regular basis at home, office or classroom.

How To Conduct

  1. Size of group between 2-10 people (I think 10 is a bit large).
  2. Example the value
  3. 15-30 minutes per person.

Guidelines

  • Only the person holding “the heart” is allowed to talk
  • You don’t judge or criticise what anyone else has said.
  • You pass the heart/object to the left after you turn, or say “I pass” if you have nothing to say.
  • You talk only about how you feel.
  • You keep the information that is shared confidential.
  • You don’t leave the Heart Talk until it’s declared complete.

Result From A Heart Talk

  • Enhanced listening skills
  • Constructive expression of feelings
  • Improved conflict resolution skills
  • Improved abilities to let go of resentments and old issues
  • Development of mutual respect and understanding
  • Greater sense of connection, unity, and bonding.
