Arsenio’s ESL Podcast: Season 3 – Episode 8 – Building Your Confidence – Round 2

Welcome back to another episode, everyone! I’ve got some things you can do to improve your confidence, but most importantly, your friends make all the difference in the world.

  1. Remember that perfect doesn’t exist.  You need to focus on improvement only.  Perfection or being a perfectionist is a gateway to a discontent life.  The most important things to focus on are what you’re good at and what you enjoy.
  2. Try new things.  This is called getting out of your comfort zone.  When you get out of your comfort zone, realize that you’re going to face and hit a lot of rejection.  When this happens, you’ll be more prone to crawling back in your hole.  Don’t do that.  Face the failures of life and learn from them.
  3. Do exercise.  This will help you reduce stress and become healthier and happier.
  4. Have realistic goals.  I know, this is controversial topic, but if you’re taking a TOEIC or IELTS examination, aiming for an overall 8.5 or a 900 on TOEIC is unrealistic.  It’s good to visualize it, but you’re going to be let down time after time.  Having goals about learning English, vocabulary, and all other facets is the golden key to success.
  5. Celebrate your achievements.  This is crucial.  Got a compliment from a foreigner about your pronunciation? Celebrate it.  Understand a song more than before? Celebrate it!  Anytime you learn or achieve the small goals, please celebrate it!
  6. Be confident in your own opinions, ideas, and feelings.  This is especially important.  This will give you the self-esteem you don’t have.  If you’re not confidence, everything else will fall off.
  7. Make contributions.  Help a classmate who is having trouble.  Give your parents a hand at home.  Give someone at work a compliment.  Help the blind lady (which I’ve done before) navigate her way up the stairs.  Do it without expectation though!

Welcome back, everyone! It’s been a long time since I’ve done a TOEIC video.  Excuse behind it? None.  It takes a lot of time and preparation.  However, I’ve got a special treat.

Since I’m checking out what the market likes, my reading comprehension video on YouTube has gotten an insane amount of views.  This time I’m coming back with how to deal with charts, tables, forms, double passages in this segment (could be broken up into two).  So without further ado, let’s get this show started!

Questions involving charts, tables, forms and double passages require a slightly different approach.

Let’s first break down an email, which will relate to many of my business English students.  So, down below are some features and how to find information quickly.  I will have A-F and I want you to match it with 1-6.

A. The main focus of the chart/table/form

B. Details of how information in the chart/table/form is meant to be used.

C. Information about who the text is from or intended for.

D. Extra details that indicate changes/differences to information in the chart/table/form

E. Background information that relates to the chart/table/form or the people who use it.

F. Details/facts/numbers/dates/names

Arsenio’s ESL Podcast: Season 3 – Episode 7 – Grammar – Gerunds and Infinitives Part III (Intermediate)

I’m bringing to you some more difficult gerunds and infinitives! The revision is never enough until mastery comes.  Here we go with some more rules and a difficult passage for you all to do.

Gerund Rules

  • As the subject/object of a sentence.
  • With go to talk about physical activities.
  • After prepositions.
  • After verbs of liking or disliking (except when the verb goes with would, would like, would prefer)
  • After certain verbs like admit, avoid, consider, involve, risk, suggest

 

Infinitive Rules

  • To explain why somebody does something.
  • Immediately after adjectives.
  • After too, enough, the first, the last
  • After certain verbs like agree, appear, arrange, ask, decide, expect, forget, help, learn, manage, need, promise, try, want.

Passage

It’s amazing thinking/to think how much T.V. we watch everyday at home.  The problem is that watching/to watch TV can quickly become boring, repetitive, and lead to insanity.  It’s important using/to use a variety of different tools, resources and other things keeping/to keep your brain ageless.  What do I mean by that? For instance, instead of watching/to watch TV, here are some other things that might work for you.

1.

Leaving/To leave your home and disrupting your body’s biochemistry would work.  Research indicates that doing/to do the same thing over and over will become a habit, which is extremely difficult to undo.  Another idea would be getting/to get a book that will help you with what you’re trying achieving/to achieve in life, like personal development books.

2.

Another thing technique is commuting/to commute time.  Almost ten percent of our lives are spent/spending commuting in the mornings and evenings after work.  Helping/To help with that downtime, put on a podcast so increase your English learning capabilities, such as tuning/to tune into Arsenio’s ESL Podcast. Another thing you can do is join groups online that will help you with your personal goals.

I haven’t done one of these in a long time, so here I am giving you an IELTS Part 1 in a podcast and YouTube format.  Let’s break down these questions.

  • Do you like to exercise? Why or why not?
  • Is exercising important to you? Why or why not?
  • If you exercise, do you need to diet, too? Why do you think so?
  • Do you think more about your health now compared to when you were younger?

 

Do you like to exercise? – I absolutely love to exercise, especially in the mornings because it gives me my whypower.  My whypower is the motive behind why I do it to begin with, which is disruption.  Since I started taking my health seriously at the beginning of the year, I’ve achieved so many health goals, targets, and I’ve given myself the fittest body to date.

No, I don’t like exercising because I’ve read in a book that exercising is the worst way to get in shape, according to some publications that were recently published within the last couple of years.

Is exercising important to you?

Exercising played the most pivotal road in my life.  It was a cold night in 2005 that my life changed forever, and it was all in part because of a catastrophic failure I suffered at the Sunrise Regional Championships in Track & Field.  To this day, when I do Tough Mudders and Spartan Races all around the world, I remember that failure; and it’s that which pushes me across the finish line.

If you exercise, do you need to diet?

I believe recovery is extremely important, along with dieting in the entire process.  Without proper dieting, one could exercise twice a day for 300 days a year, but if they continue binging on trans-fatty foods, improvement won’t happen.

Do you think more about your health now compared to when you were younger?

I wasn’t aware of the damage I was putting my body through while I was younger.  Some days I would eat maybe 4k mg’s of sodium.  I would eat crackers and frozen pizza on an routine basis, along with crazy sugary drinks.  As a youngster, this could’ve set me up for metabolic diseases in a later stage of life.  Because I developed the conscious awareness (living in Thailand), I now follow a strict lifestyle (which I absolutely love) and I only eat my favorite foods (pizza and a burger) once every two weeks.

We’re back with some more phrasals! One of my students from a long time ago told me that I should do more of these blogs/podcasts because it could be very difficult to follow.  Well, I have some more on board today!

Talk + about = discuss.

Be prepared to use phrasal in discussions and conversations.  Using phrasals correctly can make you sound more natural.

Discuss, as I’ve written before, is formal.  Talk about is informal.

Arsenio’s ESL Podcast: Season 3 – Episode 4 – Speaking Skill – Offering Advice and Suggestions

Use some of these phrases below when offering advice to others.  Some are followed by the -ing form of the verb.

  • I suggest going to Siam Paragon.

Others are followed by an infinitive.

Arsenio’s ESL Podcast: Season 3 – Episode 3 – Discussion Questions/Critical Thinking

As promised, I wanted to implement some more developing thinking for my ESL learners around the globe (and for my native English speakers who aren’t asked these questions at school).

Nourishment is the topic today.  It means the things that we need to stay alive, healthy and grow strong.

What are some of the best ways to find physical and mental nourishment?

Freewriting – 15 minutes

In the beginning of my entrepreneurial journey, I started meditating before going to work everyday.  It was a money affirmation by Bob Proctor.  I would do it in stillness, laying down with the blinds open.  This would really relax me, my spirit, and all the outside noise that would’ve been going on at the time.  So, this is called meditation/visualization.

Physical nourishment involves me doing strength, core, power, and conditioning training every morning.  After I’m done working out, I feel that I can conquer anything.  David Goggins says, “do the things that suck,” but that “suck” can become a passion.

What are some brain foods that you eat? Do you eat blueberries? Chocolate? Fish? Pasta?

What are some of the differences you feel when you consume brain food compared to when you don’t?

If I eat anything high in sodium, fat, carbs, or fast-food in general (primarily in the afternoon), I feel very lethargic, tired and fatigue.  I often get drowsy, too.  However, if I eat good fat like avocado, blueberries, nuts, or things high in B vitamins, I’m often awake.

We’re back at some more Modal Verbs and today I want to talk about how often we use these specific ones in terms of telling or advising people to do or not to do something.  Different modal verbs express how strongly you feel something should or shouldn’t be done.

Form

Could

Could: This is most often used to make suggestions and emails.

Subject + could + base form                         A: You could eat blueberries and nuts.                                                                                            B: Could you please send me the article?

 

Should

Should: These are considered stronger/imperative.  You use these when you think actions are necessary.

Subject + should/have to + base form     

Example: You should eat a breakfast complete with brain foods.

Must/have 

Must: is also very strong.  It is often used when there is a negative consequence.  You use it when stating facts.

Subject + must + base form

Example: You must implement stillness into your day to relax your mind and body, or else you will get sick.
