ARSENIO’S ESL PODCAST | SEASON 5 EPISODE 140 | Writing Skill | Paraphrasing Effectively

This is going to be excellent for a lot of you out there; whether you’re taking IELTS and trying to paraphrase the first paragraph of a task II, or just your writing in general. To paraphrase effectively, you need to change the original source material. Specialized terms can remain as they are, but you should paraphrase other language by:

  • Changing passive verb forms to active verb forms, and vice versa.
  • Using synonyms or different phrases that mean the same thing.
  • Changing word forms.
  • Changing the word order.
  • Turning positive verbs to negative, and vice versa, where appropriate.

ARSENIO’S ESL PODCAST | SEASON 5 EPISODE 139 | GRAMMAR | NOMINAL CLAUSES

A nominal clause is a group of words that performance the same function as a noun. They can be the subject or object of a sentence; Example: Families are getting smaller (= subject) // The UN estimates that by 2030 the world will need 50% more food. (= object)

Nominal clauses include clauses which follow that, if/whether, and questions.

TOEFL iBT | Independent Essay | 1 on 1 Coaching | Tips on Constructing your ESSAY

BOOM! We’re here with the writing segment! I’m excited to debut this because I know a lot of you are have troubles with getting grades on your writing. A student of mine had submitted is independent essay, so it’s time to break it down, little by little, and give tips and techniques on how to construct your essay and evaluate how he did on his.

Independent Essay

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? In the past, young people depended too much on their parents to make decisions for them; today young people are better able to make decisions about their own lives. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

No one can deny that there are both positive and negative aspects of the parents presence and their effect on their children. If I were asked to choose, I would definitely agree. It is my firm belief that in the past children relied on their parents but nowadays they are capable of making their own decisions for 2 reasons, and I will develop these ideas in the subsequent paragraphs.

To begin with, in the past there were no sources of information besides our parents so it was very hard to get advice which will help you make a decision. Children had to rely on their parents and their experiences to help them decide on what they want. I have to admit that my opinion on this matter has been profoundly influenced by my own personal experience. You see, about 15 years ago, I was debating about which college to join so I needed my parents advice to help me decide on which college I would choose, my father started to ask me a lot of questions to discover my interests and potentials and as a result, he helped me to choose my college. For this reason, children in the past needed their parents and depended on them in making their decisions.

Secondly, nowadays the internet is the key to solving a lot of problems and helping almost everyone in different aspects of their lives. Children today are capable of using such technology and they have a huge database that they can search and get information from. Drawing from my own experience, my younger brother after finishing his high school decided that he doesn’t wanna join college and will start his own private business so he and his friends started a small business as they have done their research and decided that joining college will be a waste for their time. Moreover, children today influence one another more than their parents as they spend most of their time together and come up with solutions for whatever they might encounter in their lives. It is certainly clear that children now can be self reliant and depend on themselves.

In light of the above-mentioned reasons, I strongly believe that children in the past depended mostly on their parents but now they make their own decisions.

ARSENIO’S ESL PODCAST | SEASON 5 EPISODE 135 | Grammar | Impersonal Passive

We use the impersonal passive to present information in a more formal way. The structure is used with verbs of perception such as think, know, say, understood, expect, see, and conclude.

It is known that competition helps investment.

It can be seen that this method is the most successful.

The first part of the sentence is passive and the second part remains the same as the original base sentence.

It is expected that rock launches will increase.

Rocket launches will increase.

ARSENIO’S ESL PODCAST | SEASON 5 EPISODE 134 | Presentation Skill | Slide Presentations

Effective slides provide valuable visual support for the information you are presenting in two ways: the slides help the audience to understand, and they help the speaker to give a stronger presentation. I’ve seen presentations that had too many words on their slides and the audience would become distracted within minutes. So, for maximum effect, keep the slides simply by doing the following (in the podcast).

  • Use large text (at least 28 point) and a clear font style.
  • Use bullets and short sentences.
  • Label visuals carefully — minimally but clearly.
  • Limit video to two minutes.
  • Limit the use of special effects (e.g., sounds and animation).
  • Have a uniform approach (e.g., all slides enter from the same side).

Remember, your spoken presentation is the focus — the slides are just the support.

  • Prepare the slides after establishing the main points of your presentation.
  • Include one slide for every two to three minutes of presentation only.

What would happen if a speaker/presenter did not follow each piece of advice? Tune into the podcast down below.

IELTS Speaking Correction seRVICES / cOACHING

I’m rolling out a great IELTS speaking service today. It’s important to have multiple products with multiple price points out there to cater to the masses, so in saying that, I’ve rolled out my IELTS (part II) correction services. As most of you know, Part II is possibly the most daunting because you’re unsure what type of question would be asked. This pushes you to speak for up to two minutes about a topic, and if you don’t know how to carry the conversation, you could miss a lot of marks.

So, I’m now providing a reliable source in terms of correcting your Part II speaking tasks which will be graded on the following criteria: fluency and coherence, pronunciation, lexical resources and grammatical range and accuracy.

For each speaking audio you submit, you will receive valuable feedback, action points, a guesstimate in terms of what score you would get from it, and how you can improve.

Depending on the package, you will also be given a free 1-hour video session to go over your previous tasks and even do live coaching.

Inquire about the services today by hitting any of the social links down below (next page).
