Questions & Answers: How to Jab & When to Right Hook

So, this is a special request from one of my friends who’s originally from Hanoi but living in Bangkok, Thailand.

What I love about this request was she asked me about the rest of the video.  No one has asked me about the rest of my 1-minute fire video before, so I told her that I would make a podcast specially catered to her and everyone else.

Gary Vee’s Philosophy: Jab, jab, jab, right hook.

This equates to give, give, give, ask.  Gary Vee puts an insane amount of content out there and asks people to share it from time-to-time.  No one else really does that because after sales and promising a marketed Instagram video, they tell you to “click the link” for free resources and it always comes down to paying.

This is called right hook/upper-cut.

You can’t ask for rewards after not doing a god damn thing because that will breed entitlement.  You’re not doing it out of the good nature of your soul, instead you’re doing it for financial gain.  You will absolutely lose if that happens.

How do I do it?

Ok, you guys are probably wondering how a man that has so many blogs, podcasts, etc on his website make money from it? I don’t.  Right now is the relationships building stage.  These are the jabs galore. I want to show everyone, from top to bottom, who I am.  This is especially crucial because if no one knows you and you post an ad on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook asking them to BUY YOUR COURSE, that’s a ridiculous haymaker to throw at people don’t know you.  These people end up losing respect and posting ugly comments about your product because of it.  Remember, human beings are sensitive.

From my YouTube videos, to making my podcast, Facebook page, etc.  Nothing in terms of money has been made yet. That’s not my why.  My WHY is to make English LEARNING.  Period…don’t study it, learn it.  Live in it.  Watch my videos.  Laugh a little and tell your friends about the things I said to inspire them to learn it. I will become the coolest teacher on my planet.  Now, when the time comes, I will start putting webinars, newsletters, and create ebooks for courses, but all of that will come in the next year.  My main focus is attention.  Like Gary Vee said, “I’m day-trading attention.”

That Jack Canfield Story

Jack Canfield wrote about a guy named Tom.  Tom worked for a multinational company and was always sent on business trips in first class.  Being able to sit in the comfortable compartments away from everyone was the best for him — until he found out how much it costed.  He realized that he can bring his kids along, donate to charities and use that money in a more useful way.  Not only that, he realized that people in economy class were even more interesting than the first-class passengers.  He right hooked and hit a pot of gold when he found out he was doing more taking than giving, sitting in first-class.

Gary Vee’s Crushing It: Full Book Review — How To Start Crushing It NOW! — The Ultimate Guide

https://www.spreaker.com/user/thearseniobuckshow/gary-vees-crushing-it-full-book-review-h

Man, I first want to give a special thanks to Gary.  Because I learned so much in the Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and FB sections of his book (towards the end), my YouTube has shot up within the last 10 days and I’ve seen unbelievable growth on all platforms.  Absolutely amazed by it because he’s just right — almost all the time.

I’ve finally reached the completion of this book and it’s time to top this bad boy off with a ‘How To Guide,’ of course, by The Arsenio Buck Show.  Let’s get started!

Document, Don’t Create!

I’ve recently met friends in Slovenia, Belarus and Mongolia, all of which are naked to the ears of most human beings (especially in America).  With them already running businesses, I told them to provide the world with insight into their lives in their fascinatingly respective countries.  People who are wondering if they want to try “shit” out, have someone be douchey (as Gary Vee has said) and walk around with you all day, filming the chaos (or lack thereof) in your daily life.  People want real.  People want the truth.  People don’t want to bullshit, fabricated Instagram photos of people fronting.  They want YOU!

Suffocate your bullshit excuses….add to the list below.

I have a full-time job.
I don’t have any money.
I have kids.
I don’t have time.
My industry has too many strict rules.
I have an idea for an app, but I don’t know how to code.
My parents don’t get it.
My family is holding me back.
I’m afraid my friends will get ahead of me.
I still haven’t finished the books assigned by my life coach.
No one was watching.
Only a few people were reading.
I don’t know which idea to pursue.
I don’t have the right equipment.
I don’t know where to start.
I’m too old.
I’m an artist, not a businessperson.
I’m not into anything monetizable.
I’m afraid I’ll get hate comments.”

En route to your success, you’re going to encounter lots of delays, setbacks, and TROLLS! I still remember Gary Vee going on a rant with a dumpster behind him, calling out a troll on Instagram by the name of PunkMan96.  It was the funniest thing I’ve ever witnessed, but it’s also the truth.

Hell, I recently had a troll on my YouTube calling me a MISOGYNIST.  Do you think that’s going to stop me from being who I already am? Fuck no! If not, I’m excited that people are communicating with me in general!

Fear of Failure

I thought a many of times I’ve failed at my podcast.  Hell, people fail at a lot of different things.  Gary Vee talks about how his Ask Gary Vee show has lost subscribers and he’s completely ok with that.  However, D Rock, the man who follows Gary Vee with a camera (I think), thinks he’s making a massive mistake.  Guys, failure is imminent, and it’s needed.  You better embrace your failures, kiss them, hang them and thank them everyday.  Life is boring without failures.  I recently had my 2nd worst failure in the history of my life in terms of competing, and it forced me to finally sign up with a gym, full-time, and completely transform my health.

You’ve got to try things out.  Period.

Get Discovered

“You need to understand something: when you’re starting with nothing, you will find that your absolute breakthrough opportunities will be developed in two ways:
By the smart use of hashtags, a strategy that requires an unbelievably long grind.
By direct-messaging, i.e., reaching out directly to people and offering something of value in return for their attention, a strategy that requires an unbelievably long grind.
It’s the second one that I believe holds the most promise, which is why, whenever possible, I’ve included instructions on how to collaborate and business-develop within each platform we discuss in this book. Collaborations are the absolutely most tried-and-true way to grow a fan base quickly—quickly being a relative term. In most cases, you should count on this process taking years, not months. If that bothers you, close the book.”

With my personal development podcast, I started doing interviews, kicking them off with The Poise Pursuit, in the very beginning stages.  After that, I interviewed a few other entrepreneurs before I started making big splashes with CEO’s from StemCell companies and fitness entrepreneurs.  Recently, I interviewed a millionaire author by the name of David Mauro who had the most awe-inspiring story one could ever imagine.  Radio personalities and other coaches have come on board.  I would have to say the most lucrative had to be Luke Burrows because it landed me a content writer and a joint-partnership with Motivational Mentors, a weekly show that Luke and I host and answer a variety of different questions.

Collaborations are the best.  Gary Vee talks about influencers, but it depends who those people are.  You don’t want to pay people who have a bunch of nasty followers who post sexist comments. Something to consider.

Twitter

“There are several other advantages to using Twitter as your pillar content:
It’s a complete and trustworthy directory. The platform has been around long enough to have perfected its verification system, which gives it a better search function. You can still spend a lot of time guessing whether the Instagram account you’re targeting is real or not.
Its retweet feature offers a remarkable opportunity to create instant awareness. Let’s say you make a YouTube mash-up of the rapper Logic’s music videos. It’s unlikely he’s going to see it, even if he’s tagged. Share the mash-up on Twitter, however, and the retweets can propel your video to dramatic virality, the kind that even the biggest influencers notice. This kind of word of mouth does not exist on Instagram or Snapchat and is enormously beneficial to content creators.  Not only that, you can try to spark that word of mouth many, many more times on Twitter than on other platforms. I post three, maybe four times per day on Instagram, but there are days when I could post forty-seven times on Twitter. The fact that it’s as welcoming to the written word as to pictures gives content creators the flexibility and leeway to increase the volume of their storytelling.”

I landed an interview with Harvesting Happiness Radio’s Lisa Cypers-Kamen.  I was also put on listening notes where I had a girl contact me to put David Mauro on my podcast, too.  Through twitter, you’re able to have real-time conversations with real people.  I gained about 16 followers in the last 16-hours (for some reason) and one of them was a biz developer from Howell, Michigan, a place I’ve seen pop up on my podcast.

YouTube Best Practices

If you want to increase the amount of time people spend watching every video you post on your channel as a whole, make sure you can answer the questions below.
Video Optimization

TITLES: How much thought have you put into your video title? Does the title accurately reflect the video’s content? Is the majority of the title viewable on mobile? Is the title short and concise, emotionally driven, and/or keyword optimized?

DESCRIPTIONS: Are the top two lines of the description keyword optimized? Are there links to other similar videos or playlists in the description? Is there a subscribe link? Are there links to your other social-media accounts? Are all of the links clickable and trackable?”

TAGS: Are there at least ten tags in the description? Are both one-word and phrase tags included? Do the tags accurately reflect the video’s content? Are the tags valuable, that is, do they have high search volumes but low competition? You can find this out by using tools like VidIQ, Google Adwords Keyword Planner, and Keywordtool.io.

THUMBNAILS: Does the thumbnail accurately reflect the video’s content? If there is text on the thumbnail, is it easy to read on all devices? If there is text, does it complement the title?

YOUTUBE CARDS: To extend watch time on your channel, are you including YouTube cards within your video to drive traffic to other relevant videos you’ve posted?”

BANNER: Does the banner accurately reflect the channel’s content and genre? Does the graphic transfer well to all devices?

ABOUT SECTION/CHANNEL DESCRIPTION: Are the top two lines keyword optimized? Is the first paragraph an overview of the channel? Have you included the upload schedule? Are all of the social-media links clickable? (They don’t have to be trackable.)

PLAYLISTS: Does the channel have custom playlists? Do the playlists have keyword-optimized descriptions? Are the playlists featured on the landing page of the channel?

CHANNEL TRAILER: Is a channel trailer displayed on the landing page? Does the channel trailer accurately reflect the channel’s content and genre? Is the channel trailer telling the best story in the shortest amount of time?”

Leave People Behind

Boy, I had a very wild thought yesterday and realized how come I am where I am and my family isn’t.  I’ve tried a number of times to get them out of their rut, but I couldn’t be the rescue 911 hero.  i needed to go through the door first without carrying all of that weight.  Not only family, but friends, too.

Freshman Year of High School

I was standing in a circle with Sylvester, Mark, and a few other designated “losers” during lunch time of my freshman year of high school.  While we were standing there, the boys were talking about skipping/ditching class and going to house parties.  At that time, I was in a marching band that was basically made up of smart, aviation/medical students.  At the given moment, the Rite of Passage happened.  I needed to make the decision….am I going to flunk out of high school, or hang with the geeks?

Bachelors Pad Apartment

When I first moved into this ultra-gorgeous, duplex of an apartment in the southeast side of town (near Nellis Air Force Base), everything was a fairy-tale.  My best friend was understanding and always around — for the meantime.  As soon as he got his massive check from the Navy, he quickly bought a Ford Mustang, along with so many other materialistic things and that’s when everything changed.  Money got to his head, beer pong became a daily habit, and I needed to make a decision right then — to stay the hell away from him.

Coming Back From Australia

The second day after I had come back from Australia, I was sitting downstairs when my older sister walked in.  Elated as I was, she wasn’t happy.  Because she let a cavity fester, half of her face was swollen.  The words out of her mouth next was about how bad her ex bf was and she complained, non-stop, for two hours.  Decision was there.  It’s time to throw on my Bose headphones (from Australia) and block myself out of the melancholy that I was suffocating in.

The Departure

When Linda Booker picked me up that very May 6th morning of 2013, I was beyond ecstatic to leave.  My mother had tears streaming down her face, but I felt as if all the damage was done.  After being ostricized and no one giving a damn about my future goals, that was the last critical decision I ever made — “I will never go back to Vegas to visit my family.”

Gary Vee: Last Chapter — Voice First!

Man, this has been a hell of a book, and I’ll be doing a full book review at the end of this.  On this podcast/blog, I want to talk about what Gary thinks of skills.

“I day-trade attention, and lately I am particularly interested by what people pay attention to during the transitions of their day, especially the three that occur in the home: what they do during the first fifteen minutes of their morning, the first fifteen minutes after they come home from work, and the last fifteen minutes before they go to sleep at night. Those are transition periods. They’re the moments when we take stock, get updated, and plan for the next few hours of our lives. We’re busy, so we want to do it fast. There was a time you’d pull out a pen and paper and start a to-do list, turn on the radio, or even check an app. Now, though, you don’t even have to do that. All you have to do is talk.
Podcasts fill our brains during the long periods when we’re quiet, such as while we drive or travel. Voice-first platforms are going to allow us to fill our brains during all the interstices of our lives, those blips of time that used to be lost to forgettable activities like brushing our teeth, sorting through mail, or even checking our phone notifications  In 2016, Google revealed that 20 percent of searches on its mobile app and Android devices are done by voice.1 That number is only going to rise, fast. And you have an amazing opportunity to make sure your brand rises with this trend.”

Excerpt From: Gary Vaynerchuk. “Crushing It!.” iBooks.

I’ve talked about this extensively in the past.  While I’m commuting on an extra-stuffy train in the morning, I have no time to type.  So, for those 20 minutes, I’m listening to Jim Kwik, Gary Vee or some other entrepreneurs to get my morning dose of brain food.

Another example would be in the evening heading home on Sunday.  I normally take a taxi from one side of the city to the other.  While doing this, I gaze out the window and plan for my Monday, which is my favorite day of the week.  While doing this, I could be listening to a Grant Cardone video on YouTube or preparing to send voice messages to some friends.  Either or, when I get home, I never turn on the TV.  My attention is on audio programs either on YouTube or podcasts.

Remember I talked about Alexa? In America, you can order an Uber by voice and from your bed without doing all the extra details — like grabbing your phone and getting distracted by messages.  There are now smart homes that make it so much easier.  There are shops in China without a convenient store clerk.

“What we’re seeing with the development of Voice-First is the culmination of our addiction to speed. The world moves fast and we want to keep up. If there is a choice between reading a notification or checking an app and getting the same information via Voice-First, which allows us to keep our hands free and multitask, the latter is what we’re going to pick. Just like the first washing machines and coffeemakers, Voice-First platforms will save people time. Once the masses understand that, they are going to flock to them. Be there ready and waiting when they do.”

Excerpt From: Gary Vaynerchuk. “Crushing It!.” iBooks. https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/crushing-it/id1229850109?mt=11

Skills 101

Keep your content super brief.

Make it native. Do not do what I did with my original podcast when I just transferred the audio from a video onto the podcast platform. Tailor your content to suit the reason people are coming, which is to get fast, easily digestible information nuggets. “Hey, Alexa users . . .”

Make it the highest quality possible. I cannot stress how important it is that you not treat your Skill as a dumping ground. It’s great to collect the scraps from your other content so they don’t go to waste, but study each piece closely and use your imagination and creativity to craft something new and fresh with them.”

Gary Vee: Podcasts

Oh! My absolute favorite! And of course the “story of my podcast” will be in my podcast because I really don’t want to write it out for the um-teenth time.

I will talk about my podcast and the growth of it…though.  I’m talking about my two podcasts.

Personal Development Podcast – Debut January 2016

Now, I started doing my personal development podcast after the madness I’ve endured in Thailand.  I decided to make a podcast to help others, of all colors, get over the mental barriers that confined them to think outside the box and stop victimizing themselves.  So, I did.  I didn’t have a plan like I did with my ESL podcast.  I just started with Napoleon Hill’s book Law of Success and related it to my life.  Shortly after that, I ended up buying Jack Canfield’s book and others.

Since then, there have been fluctuations, but there hasn’t been a consistent upward trend since the beginning of 2016, which then brings me to the question, “is what I’m doing with my personal development podcast actually working?” Perhaps.  Perhaps people would rather listen to the Lewis Howes of the world compared to me.  That’s perfectly fine.  It’s a win-win situation for me.  Why? I’m learning from books, teaching it and remembering it even more, so even if people don’t listen to me, I’m still learning and applying everything I learn to my life.

Yes, I’ve gotten huge podcast downloads back in the day from Era Beach, Hawaii/South Korea/Macedonia/Mauritius and other places, but they came and they went — lol.  It’s all about consistency, and now that’s what I’m getting.  Sure, ugly days and whatnot, but it’s all about patience (two years worth).

Nonetheless, everything I learned while reading has been applied to my life and completely transformed who I am and the way I think.

English as a Second Language Podcast – March 2018

Honestly, I can’t remember the numbers too much in the beginning.  I would check the plays, but I would send the podcast a lot to my friends and post it on my English Language Learning page.  Moving forward, I would average something like 30-50 plays a day, much more than my personal development podcast.  Then came the viral videos, two of them being interviews that I did with a Libyan and Thai.  One day there were 400 plays and the majority of those plays came from Europe: Armenia, England, Italy, Spain, Netherlands.  Just about every country out there.  I didn’t know why those specific videos went viral, but it left me hungry and wanting more.

These are the stats from my last 10 episodes.

  • United States
    44%
    114
  • Thailand
    16%
    41
  • Brazil
    11%
    28
  • Mexico
    8%
    20
  • China
    5%
    14
  • Japan
    5%
    12
  • India
    4%
    11
  • Singapore
    3%
    8
  • United Kingdom
    3%
    7
  • Ireland
    2%
    6

Those are the plays and the percentages.  It’s very interesting to see America being the top.  I understand Tijuana, but not the other places.  Some cities, which have listened to my personal development podcast back in 2016, are also listening to this one.  I’m pretty excited about what’s happening and now I’m converting some of the podcasts to video form for YouTube, attracting viewers and ultimately bringing them onto my podcast.

One of the biggest statistics had to be my expansion in Brazil.  First it was Rio De and Belo Horizonte.  Now it has expanded to more than 10 cities, scattering all across Brazil.  So, the attention is there.

Arsenio’s Podcast 101 – What’s The Purpose?

You got something to say? Well, say it! However, there will be ramifications for your voice.  If you’re making a podcast on politics, people are going to hate you and debate you with senseless ignorance 24/7.  A popular podcast called “Guys We Fucked,” is a massive hit.  Why? It’s all about attention.  People want to hear and talk about controversial topics.  In America, everything is pretty wide-open in terms of communication.  However, this is taboo in Asia.

You need to pick the genre.  Figure out what you really want to talk about and how long you can talk about it for.  Once you decide that, you’ll be on your way.

Don’t Be Cheap — They Can Be Pricey!

I’ve been using Spreaker.com for years already.  Because I used it for my personal development podcast, I can’t use it for my ESL podcast, so that’s why I found another hosting site. Podcasts can range from 4.99-99.99….and that’s in USD.  You can pay in bulk, too, like with SoundCloud.

Expose — Not Promote!

You have no idea how many money I’ve spent on individual podcasts.  I tried sponsoring some episodes and it never worked.  The goal is to make it available on all devices.  Is it available on GooglePlay? Android? Apple Podcasts? Spotify (although difficult to get onto now)? SoundCloud? iHeartRadio? Stitcher? You want to search all of these and make sure they’re readily available on all platforms.

Collab Your Ass Off!

Instagram and cold-messaging can lead to great success.  I can’t remember, but the first interviewee I came across messaged me through Instagram and wanted to come on my show.  There was another instance that BioQuark also emailed me and the last one was from an Author named David Mauro.  My podcast was taken and put on listennotes.  That’s how they got in contact with me.  The more platforms, the better.  Will people listen to podcasts on Spotify? Not really sure.  They’re trying to break into it, but Apple Podcasts and SoundCloud are huge right now.

Nonetheless, I’ve had 13 interviews so far, interviewing authors, entrepreneurs, start-ups and others.  Having them share the episode is also critical. Oh, I would seriously recommend a site that automatically uploads your episodes onto these platforms, too.  Example, spreaker uploads directly onto SoundCloud, iHeartRadio, YouTube, Twitter and FB.  However, BuzzSprout doesn’t have these features just yet.

Gary Vee: 7 Steps to Business Development

  1. Make sure your Instagram is full of incredible content, the best you can make. More people are about to come see what you’re about.

  2. Search relevant keywords. For example, if you’re building a biker brand, motorcycles.

  3. Click on the first hashtag that shows up. As I write this, there are over 2.4 million posts with #motorcycles.

  4. Click on every picture you see with that hashtag. The first four that show up in this instance belong to accounts that have a combined following of over one million Instagrammers.

  5. Investigate every account and any linked websites to confirm that they are owned by people or companies in your field, or even if they’re not, to check if they could use your services or products anyway.

  6. Click on the three dots in the upper right corner of their pages and send those individuals or businesses a custom-written direct message. Do not spam with cut-and-paste bullshit. If that’s the best you can do, you’ve already lost.

  7. In your message, explain what drew you to them (I love your work; I’ve always admired you; you post the funniest memes; this post is so creative; etc.), why you are worth paying attention to (my goal is to promote better biker safety; I’ve designed a helmet even the most helmet-averse rider won’t mind wearing; I’ve launched the freshest, most exciting biker-themed YouTube channel on the Internet), and what value you can offer (I’d like to send you one of my helmets to try; I’d love to invite you on air to talk about your new book, and I’d be honored if you’d let me make you a free video documenting your next ride; I can send you six bikers to model leather jackets on your vlog for free).

Excerpt From: Gary Vaynerchuk. “Crushing It!.” iBooks.

I went into detail on how you can make offers, send messages and even post thoughtful messages on Instagrammers profiles in my podcast down below.  7 steps in full effect!
