Ramble of Positivity: Episode XXVI – Number Four + A Resounding Offer

Here I am in the middle of the check-in line, grateful as hell (although the following events will lead to a different podcast on self-control) because this is a record forth country this year alone.  Not only that, but an offer — here’s the story.

Back in 2016, I taught at a company in an industrial estate just north of where my previous job is.  This company got in contact with my company and decided to sign a deal whereas they would send teachers there to teach.   Let me give you a rundown of what my company (and others) do.

When marketing directors advertise a company to another company to promote their brand of learning English, they normally state a massive initial number in terms of the total course cost.  Hardly ever does it stay that number, but the number still remained quite steep.

Some of the companies would be massive Japanese teach companies like Toshiba, and even Austrian companies like Swarovski.  Anywho, The teach gets paid only a fraction of the total cost.

Let’s put it this way.  I got paid 22$ an hour to teach at a Japanese tech company, but the company profited somewhere between 100-300$ per hour.  This is one of the biggest problems because teachers are taken advantage of, but how can a teacher market himself? Let’s go deeper.

An ex student of mine contacted me via Facebook messenger and said, “excuse me, teacher.  How much would it cost ____________ to pay you to come back and teach here?”

Let me put this at a macro scale.

They didn’t call my old place of work back; or maybe they did and realized that I no longer worked there (a really high chance). Therefore, one of the students got into direct contact with me and asked me for my services.

Do you understand how powerful that is? I just took down a 9-year-old language center because of maybe my online persona, charisma, or maybe because I’m just a devoted individual when it comes to teaching and inspiring?

When I got that message, my jaw-dropped.  They didn’t call them; they called ME! They want MY services and they’re willing to pay me in FULL for the work I do.

See, guys, when you get to a stage in your life when you’re building such an incredible online persona, people will start getting in contact with YOU.  Remember, a headhunter recently contacted me that’s stationed outside Santiago, Chile.  I received another email from another guy about 12 hours later, and in the previous two months, and Indian tech company based in Delhi wanted me to teach there team in Bangkok.

It’s patience, people.  I was just in a state of oblivion and despair the first three months of this year because I was trying to break the chains of an old job while trying to search for new ones.  I was turned down by 6 different solo-job-applicants because the color of my skin; and another company disregarded all my emails after sending me six potential job suitors.

Man, I first want to give a special thanks to Gary.  Because I learned so much in the Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and FB sections of his book (towards the end), my YouTube has shot up within the last 10 days and I’ve seen unbelievable growth on all platforms.  Absolutely amazed by it because he’s just right — almost all the time.

I’ve finally reached the completion of this book and it’s time to top this bad boy off with a ‘How To Guide,’ of course, by The Arsenio Buck Show.  Let’s get started!

Document, Don’t Create!

I’ve recently met friends in Slovenia, Belarus and Mongolia, all of which are naked to the ears of most human beings (especially in America).  With them already running businesses, I told them to provide the world with insight into their lives in their fascinatingly respective countries.  People who are wondering if they want to try “shit” out, have someone be douchey (as Gary Vee has said) and walk around with you all day, filming the chaos (or lack thereof) in your daily life.  People want real.  People want the truth.  People don’t want to bullshit, fabricated Instagram photos of people fronting.  They want YOU!

Suffocate your bullshit excuses….add to the list below.

I have a full-time job.
I don’t have any money.
I have kids.
I don’t have time.
My industry has too many strict rules.
I have an idea for an app, but I don’t know how to code.
My parents don’t get it.
My family is holding me back.
I’m afraid my friends will get ahead of me.
I still haven’t finished the books assigned by my life coach.
No one was watching.
Only a few people were reading.
I don’t know which idea to pursue.
I don’t have the right equipment.
I don’t know where to start.
I’m too old.
I’m an artist, not a businessperson.
I’m not into anything monetizable.
I’m afraid I’ll get hate comments.”

En route to your success, you’re going to encounter lots of delays, setbacks, and TROLLS! I still remember Gary Vee going on a rant with a dumpster behind him, calling out a troll on Instagram by the name of PunkMan96.  It was the funniest thing I’ve ever witnessed, but it’s also the truth.

Hell, I recently had a troll on my YouTube calling me a MISOGYNIST.  Do you think that’s going to stop me from being who I already am? Fuck no! If not, I’m excited that people are communicating with me in general!

Fear of Failure 

I thought a many of times I’ve failed at my podcast.  Hell, people fail at a lot of different things.  Gary Vee talks about how his Ask Gary Vee show has lost subscribers and he’s completely ok with that.  However, D Rock, the man who follows Gary Vee with a camera (I think), thinks he’s making a massive mistake.  Guys, failure is imminent, and it’s needed.  You better embrace your failures, kiss them, hang them and thank them everyday.  Life is boring without failures.  I recently had my 2nd worst failure in the history of my life in terms of competing, and it forced me to finally sign up with a gym, full-time, and completely transform my health.

You’ve got to try things out.  Period.

Get Discovered

“You need to understand something: when you’re starting with nothing, you will find that your absolute breakthrough opportunities will be developed in two ways:
By the smart use of hashtags, a strategy that requires an unbelievably long grind.
By direct-messaging, i.e., reaching out directly to people and offering something of value in return for their attention, a strategy that requires an unbelievably long grind.
It’s the second one that I believe holds the most promise, which is why, whenever possible, I’ve included instructions on how to collaborate and business-develop within each platform we discuss in this book. Collaborations are the absolutely most tried-and-true way to grow a fan base quickly—quickly being a relative term. In most cases, you should count on this process taking years, not months. If that bothers you, close the book.”

With my personal development podcast, I started doing interviews, kicking them off with The Poise Pursuit, in the very beginning stages.  After that, I interviewed a few other entrepreneurs before I started making big splashes with CEO’s from StemCell companies and fitness entrepreneurs.  Recently, I interviewed a millionaire author by the name of David Mauro who had the most awe-inspiring story one could ever imagine.  Radio personalities and other coaches have come on board.  I would have to say the most lucrative had to be Luke Burrows because it landed me a content writer and a joint-partnership with Motivational Mentors, a weekly show that Luke and I host and answer a variety of different questions.

Collaborations are the best.  Gary Vee talks about influencers, but it depends who those people are.  You don’t want to pay people who have a bunch of nasty followers who post sexist comments. Something to consider.

Twitter

“There are several other advantages to using Twitter as your pillar content:
It’s a complete and trustworthy directory. The platform has been around long enough to have perfected its verification system, which gives it a better search function. You can still spend a lot of time guessing whether the Instagram account you’re targeting is real or not.
Its retweet feature offers a remarkable opportunity to create instant awareness. Let’s say you make a YouTube mash-up of the rapper Logic’s music videos. It’s unlikely he’s going to see it, even if he’s tagged. Share the mash-up on Twitter, however, and the retweets can propel your video to dramatic virality, the kind that even the biggest influencers notice. This kind of word of mouth does not exist on Instagram or Snapchat and is enormously beneficial to content creators.  Not only that, you can try to spark that word of mouth many, many more times on Twitter than on other platforms. I post three, maybe four times per day on Instagram, but there are days when I could post forty-seven times on Twitter. The fact that it’s as welcoming to the written word as to pictures gives content creators the flexibility and leeway to increase the volume of their storytelling.”

I landed an interview with Harvesting Happiness Radio’s Lisa Cypers-Kamen.  I was also put on listening notes where I had a girl contact me to put David Mauro on my podcast, too.  Through twitter, you’re able to have real-time conversations with real people.  I gained about 16 followers in the last 16-hours (for some reason) and one of them was a biz developer from Howell, Michigan, a place I’ve seen pop up on my podcast.

 

YouTube Best Practices

If you want to increase the amount of time people spend watching every video you post on your channel as a whole, make sure you can answer the questions below.
Video Optimization

TITLES: How much thought have you put into your video title? Does the title accurately reflect the video’s content? Is the majority of the title viewable on mobile? Is the title short and concise, emotionally driven, and/or keyword optimized?

DESCRIPTIONS: Are the top two lines of the description keyword optimized? Are there links to other similar videos or playlists in the description? Is there a subscribe link? Are there links to your other social-media accounts? Are all of the links clickable and trackable?”

TAGS: Are there at least ten tags in the description? Are both one-word and phrase tags included? Do the tags accurately reflect the video’s content? Are the tags valuable, that is, do they have high search volumes but low competition? You can find this out by using tools like VidIQ, Google Adwords Keyword Planner, and Keywordtool.io.

THUMBNAILS: Does the thumbnail accurately reflect the video’s content? If there is text on the thumbnail, is it easy to read on all devices? If there is text, does it complement the title?

YOUTUBE CARDS: To extend watch time on your channel, are you including YouTube cards within your video to drive traffic to other relevant videos you’ve posted?”

BANNER: Does the banner accurately reflect the channel’s content and genre? Does the graphic transfer well to all devices?

ABOUT SECTION/CHANNEL DESCRIPTION: Are the top two lines keyword optimized? Is the first paragraph an overview of the channel? Have you included the upload schedule? Are all of the social-media links clickable? (They don’t have to be trackable.)

PLAYLISTS: Does the channel have custom playlists? Do the playlists have keyword-optimized descriptions? Are the playlists featured on the landing page of the channel?

CHANNEL TRAILER: Is a channel trailer displayed on the landing page? Does the channel trailer accurately reflect the channel’s content and genre? Is the channel trailer telling the best story in the shortest amount of time?”

You’re Either Positive; Or You’re Negative

Family

After going through a journey back home to America in 2012, meeting some of the most magnificent people in Thailand, Japan, and Hawaii, you could imagine how high I was on Cloud 9.  I felt like I had conquered everything.  I was really unsure of my whereabouts over the ensuing months, but I was still elated at the fact that I went to a wild Bangkok/Phuket and I touched down in Japan.

The moment I got home, my mother picked me up at the airport and took me back to that “neighborhood.”  I was in limbo and still in vacation mode, but then slowly I smelled (marijuana) in the neighborhood and in my house – nothing had changed.  For one year I was gone, my family was still circling around in that wheel of life many people fall victim too.

I was lecturing my sister that evening about my travels to Japan, what was happening in my life, meeting people at a bar not too far from my house, and of course, the girl racial comment I got was from an anglo woman making fun of the Japanese Kanji lettering on my t-shirt.  Welcome back to Las Vegas.

My brother had a cluster of bumps on his back and ultimately needed surgery; my oldest sister was going through a TERRIBLE breakup and kept bitching about her BF, and my youngest sister, cleverly, tucked herself away in the bedroom.

Look, either you’re going to be positive or negative.  I didn’t know anywhere near as much as I do now, but I knew that complaining about reality and circumstances were going to get me nowhere.  My mom lost her job because of poor decisions, and I don’t ever recall my mom getting a job until I left (9-10 month period).  So, my brother and I had to pay the bills and it was competition.  If I paid 20$, he paid 30$ and told me I wasn’t doing much for mom.  Every time he came around me, he was always upset and wanting to bitch about something.  I could feel the energy when he walked by, and luckily, just days before my departure, the eruption didn’t happen.  I felt it festering because I wasn’t talking to my family AT ALL, but thankfully nothing ridiculous happened before I left.

Some things I will just never understand I suppose.

Teacher Ray

47-year-old Irishman who I worked with at my first, and worst job (of my life) back in Chanthaburi Thailand, which is located about 3 hours southeast from Bangkok.  Now that I look back at this particular individual, I realize that he’s the epitome of what’s wrong with foreigners in Thailand – and now he’s trapped with a child the government has taken away from him.

He had a wife that barely knew any English, and one of the most wonderful daughters one could ever imagine.  She was delightful and had a contagious laugh; also calling me “Uncle Buck.”

However, Ray would talk about his past life heaps for some odd reason.  There was a particular character he worked with and he just couldn’t let the stories go.  I’m guessing this is what he ended up running away in general.  He would go to bars, have sex with women between 18-30 years of age (in Thailand it’s extremely easy when you’re of a fair complexion), and cheat on his wife continuously.  Every time I was around him, he complained about the world and all the politics.  He never smiled or laughed about anything – just full on rants.  Last time I heard two years ago that his life left him, taking the child.  He began dating someone at the school we worked at and then broke up (super awkward situation).  He then started spewing a lot of hate at staff and then POOF! Just like that…he up and left.  Most foreign men over 40-45 years of age in Thailand suffer from the same thing.

Last Job

40-45 year olds complaining, bitching, having sex with the staff behind their wives’ backs, pointing fingers, saying their students are dumb, alcoholics, drug addicts, whore buyers.  You name it.  This was my workplace.  All of them? Well, about 75% of them.  The other ones I just couldn’t figure out.  In 2016 and after reading Jack Canfield’s book, I realized that being around life-sucking animals was stumping my growth, so I started ignoring everyone and then the “taddle-telling” began.

You had a teacher who was 72 and had a 40-year-old wife, insulting her on a continuous basis and spewing hateful rhetoric about muslims at work.  You had one of the most despicable human beings who was 50 and had a 18-year-old girlfriend.  Apparently he was a neighborhood drunk and constantly argued and beat her, all while smashing bottles out on the streets.  Another one, who was actually the worst teacher and had the worst complaints, had sex with staff, and on a nightly basis, he drove to 7-11, chugged down 3 beers, and went home.  Another one was jacked up on drugs.

I mean, why am I telling you these stories.  One, be grateful.  Be grateful that you’re not trapped in a country you absolutely hate (well, most of us).  Realize that everything you’re putting out is going to ultimately come back.  If you’re a negative, newly divorced old man, southeast Asia isn’t for you because you could be part of the jumping men, which are men who hurl themselves over balconies in Pattaya, Thailand, killing themselves.

If you move to a country because you think women are submissive and you think it’s an easy life, you’re going to find yourself hating that country because you will attract to you the bottom-of-the-food-chain-women who will milk you of all your savings.  I used to see this everyday in Pathumthani, a province north of Bangkok.  On weekends, the play was overflowing with pedaphiles trying to solicit young girls and boys to sex, but of course police did NOTHING because they were “white,” through the eyes of the dumb-beholders.  Seeing this everyday — working at a job where the British head teacher, too, was a wife-tourist — was disheartening and infuriating.

I wanted to be happy.  That area was slum-filled with the worst of mindsets.  So, how I had to infer and look at my life through a strangers eyes.  I was unhappy, terrible health (lots of pollution around there), racism, removed from company, lack of hours and money.

LEAVE.

I was either going to be on the offense, or be defensive. I was either going to surround myself with writers, business owners, trainers, and successful people – or be around men who escaped the past.  It was one way or the other.  I chose to go right.

What’s That One Habit You Can Do In The Morning? Time To Create It!

It’s that one thing that will help you in the morning and fuel that burning desire (or lack thereof).  Creating a routine in the morning is difficult, but after trying a variety of things in 2016, I have a morning routine as follows.

  • Initial wake-up into meditation.
  • After meditation, count the things that I’m grateful for in my professional and social life.
  • Prime in the shower which consists of burning hot water – to freezing cold.
  • Vitamins then off to doing my podcast + blog.
  • Head to the gym, shower at the gym, then I’m ready for work by 10am.

On the days that I’m off, I fall completely out of my routine (bad habit that I’m still trying to destroy) if I don’t write anything on my to-do list.

So, in addition to what I’ve said above, here’s a video (Tony Robbins – I’m Not Your Guru) that has an excellent morning routine that a lot of people can adopt.  Recounting the three things you’re most grateful for, going back to your earliest childhood memory, and feeling everything about those moments of pure joy.  It starts at 1:43:00 and finishes at about 1:49:00-1:50.  You need to view this video from a desktop/notebook.

Bomb Those Distractions

On one of the most important days of my professional life, I woke up at 3am and couldn’t go back to sleep because I glanced at my phone.  This is one of the problems I have with leaving my phone inside my bedroom.  GET IT OUT!

Also, you should NOT tune into the news for the first 1 hour of the day because I can tell you right now that it will leave a very lasting impression on you compared to looking at it later in the morning.  You will see yourself bitching much faster and sending that bitchy information to other people who bitch so you can bitch together and have a bitch breakfast and bitch morning.  Get the drift?

Social Networking – I’m Not talking about FB, Twitter and Co

I never….EVER….EVER….EVER have a problem with the main social networking sites out there controlling my habits.  I will admit one malicious habit is social chat apps, which in actuality drops my defences because the amount of racist that’s dished out at me.  Yet, I still get on them? Foolish.

However, I bombed them all AGAIN just two days ago and the productivity not only went up 200%, but I also regained control of my happiness.  I love to ask myself “what’s 80% of my unhappiness right now?”  There’s one particular individual who I will never talk to again for as long as I live, and there are the social chatting apps such as horrendous Tinder, Skout, Badoo, etc.  In my personal opinion, I think this is probably the worst of them all because it’s not only time-consuming, but the headaches you get involved with where again….you go out and bitch about these men seeking women as objects to your friends and that 1 hour later you’re talking about why there aren’t any good men in the world.  STEER CLEAR!

Those are my distractors.  I’ve recently taken them out….and now I have control.

Tim Ferris’ Rough Patch & The Point

During his 2013 year, he went on a downward spiral for about three months including:

  • Cried while watching Rudy. (lol. Sorry – had to laugh)
  • Repeatedly hit snooze for 1 to 3 HOURS past his planned wake time, because he simply didn’t want to face the day.
  • Considered giving everything away and moving to Montreal, Seville, or Iceland. Location varies based on what he imagined escaping to.
  • Saw a therapist for the first time, as he was convinced that he was doomed to lifelong pessimism.
  • Took his daily caffeine intake (read: self-medication) so high that his “resting” pulse was 120+ beats per minute. 8 to 10 cups of coffee per day at minimum.
  • Wore the same pair of jeans for a week straight.

We all go through this.  Three months is almost the breaking point which someone begins having suicidal thoughts.  I had this point for about 1 day just a couple days ago and I tried identifying what was the root – nothing.  Thoughts were simply wandering.

In that same time frame of about two months, he changed it all around.

  • Increased his passive income 20%+.
  • Bought his dream house.
  • Meditated twice per day for 20 minutes per session, without fail. That marked the first time he’d been able to meditate consistently.
  • Ended up cutting his caffeine intake to next-to-nothing (in the last 4 weeks).
  • With the help of his blog readers, raised $100,000+ for charity: water for his birthday.
  • Raised $250,000 in 53 minutes for a startup called Shyp.
  • Signed one of the most exciting business deals of his last 10 years—his TV show, The Tim Ferriss Experiment.
  • Added roughly 20 pounds of muscle.

    Realized—once again—that manic-depressive symptoms are just part of entrepreneurship.  Came to feel closer to all my immediate family members.

I guess that’s probably what swallowed me just a few days ago.  Not having any schedule blog posts, podcast plays being low, YouTube becoming ineffective….during those ensuing hours, I was pulling what little hair I have left around my head OUT and couldn’t even focus during my gym hour.

Resolution?

  • Wake up at least 1 hour before you have to be at a computer screen.
  • Make a cup of tea (or I take my vitamins after priming) and sit down with a pen/pencil and paper.
  • Write down the 3 to 5 things—and no more—that are making you the most anxious or uncomfortable. They’re often things that have been punted from one day’s to-do list to the next, to the next, to the next, and so on. Most important usually equals most uncomfortable, with some chance of rejection or conflict.
  • For each item, ask yourself: “If this were the only thing I accomplished today, would I be satisfied with my day?” “Will moving this forward make all the other to-dos unimportant or easier to knock off later?” Put another way: “What, if done, will make all of the rest easier or irrelevant?”
  • Look only at the items you’ve answered “yes” to for at least one of these questions.
  • Block out at 2 to 3 hours to focus on ONE of them for today. Let the rest of the urgent but less important stuff slide. It will still be there tomorrow.

“It doesn’t take much to seem superhuman and appear “successful” to nearly everyone around you. In fact, you just need one rule: What you do is more important than how you do everything else, and doing something well does not make it important.
If you consistently feel the counterproductive need for volume and doing lots of stuff, put these on a Post-it note:
Being busy is a form of laziness—lazy thinking and indiscriminate action.
Being busy is most often used as a guise for avoiding the few critically important but uncomfortable actions.” – Tim Ferris

Tim Ferris – Uncovering Fear Disguised As Optimism

It’s exactly what Bob Proctor has been saying for over 50 years, too.  That paradigm.  That mental barrier that controls everything about us.  Right when we’re getting ready to make that life-altering decision we say, “ahhhhh, I can go next year.  I’m happy with this car now.  Oh, I can save my money instead.  I can go next weekend.”

Most who avoid quitting their jobs entertain the thought that their course will improve with time or increases in income. This seems valid and is a tempting hallucination when a job is boring or uninspiring instead of pure hell. Pure hell forces action, but anything less can be endured with enough clever rationalization.

That particular afternoon after my nap and going through absolute HELL with a bunch of ignorant specimen and a completely shambolic school, I said, “is money worth it? Is this measly 1000$ USD a month worth it? No.  I quit,”  Three days later, after getting my last salary, I disappeared.

There was no future, no visa, no work permit, endless lies, horrific students, bad-mouthing teachers who spoke Thai behind my back to make a mockery of me…..that breaking point was reached.  Once you do it the first time, it makes it a hell of a lot easier.

Do you really think it will improve or is it wishful thinking and an excuse for inaction?  Did I really think my job situation would improve? If you were confident in improvement, would you really be questioning things so? Generally not. This is fear of the unknown disguised as optimism.

Are you better off than you were one year ago, one month ago, or one week ago?”

Probably not.

Nine to five for your working lifetime of 40–50 years is a long-ass time if the rescue doesn’t come. About 500 months of solid work.
How many do you have to go? It’s probably time to cut your losses.

If you are nervous about making the jump or simply putting it off out of fear of the unknown, here is your antidote.  Write and do not edit—aim for volume. Spend a few minutes on each answer.

Tim Ferris’ Rules

1. Define your nightmare, the absolute worst that could happen if you did what you are considering. What doubt, fears, and “what-ifs” pop up as you consider the big changes you can—or need—to make? Envision them in painstaking detail. Would it be the end of your life? What would be the permanent impact, if any, on a scale of 1–10? Are these things really permanent? How likely do you think it is that they would actually happen?”

2. What steps could you take to repair the damage or get things back on the upswing, even if temporarily? Chances are, it’s easier than you imagine. How could you get things back under control?”

3. What are the outcomes or benefits, both temporary and permanent, of more probable scenarios? Now that you’ve defined the nightmare, what are the more probable or definite positive outcomes, whether internal (confidence, self-esteem, etc.) or external? What would the impact of these more-likely outcomes be on a scale of 1–10? How likely is it that you could produce at least a moderately good outcome? Have less intelligent people done this before and pulled it off?

4. If you were fired from your job today, what would you do to get things under financial control? Imagine this scenario and run through questions 1–3 above. If you quit your job to test other options, how could you later get back on the same career track if you absolutely had to?

5. What are you putting off out of fear? Usually, what we most fear doing is what we most need to do. That phone call, that conversation, whatever the action might be—it is fear of unknown outcomes that prevents us from doing what we need to do. Define the worst case, accept it, and do it. I’ll repeat something you might consider tattooing on your forehead: What we fear doing most is usually what we most need to do. As I have heard said, a person’s success in life can usually be measured by the number of uncomfortable conversations he or she is willing to have. Resolve to do one thing every day that you fear. I got into this habit by attempting to contact celebrities and famous businesspeople for advice.”

 

6. What is it costing you—financially, emotionally, and physically—to postpone action? Don’t only evaluate the potential downside of action. It is equally important to measure the atrocious cost of inaction. If you don’t pursue those things that excite you, where will you be in one year, five years, and ten years? How will you feel having allowed circumstance to impose itself upon you and having allowed ten more years of your finite life to pass doing what you know will not fulfill you? If you telescope out 10 years and know with 100% certainty that it is a path of disappointment and regret, and if we define risk as “the likelihood of an irreversible negative outcome,” inaction is the greatest risk of all.

7. What are you waiting for? If you cannot answer this without resorting to the previously rejected concept of good timing, the answer is simple: You’re afraid, just like the rest of the world. Measure the cost of inaction, realize the unlikelihood and repairability of most missteps, and develop the most important habit of those who excel and enjoy doing so: action.
