TOEIC: Conditionals II

I wanted to do another rundown of conditionals so you all have a more thorough understanding. If you understand conditionals, not only will it improve your score by about 5-10 questions on Part 5, but also improve your writing – enabling you to use complex structures rather than simple structures.

Conditional sentences contain two distinct parts: the if-clause (condition) and result.  In both of these parts, the verb forms change according to the time.

Real Conditions

  • For a real condition in the future, the verb in the if-clause is usually in the present simple tense, while the verb in the result clause is in the future or imperative form.

– We will need to borrow money if taxes go up.

– If anyone calls here tomorrow, please take a message.

  • Will is sometimes used in the if-clause when it is used as a synonym of want.

– If they won’t compromise, we will have to cancel the negotiations.

  • For a real condition in the past, the verbs in both if-clause and the result clause are in the past.

-If they were waiting for a counteroffer, they were wise.

Unreal Conditions

  • For an unreal condition in the present, the verb in the if-clause is in the past form, while the verb in the result clause is would or could plus the simple (base) form.

-He would ask for an application if he wanted the job.

-If I earned more money, I could buy a better car.

  • For an unreal condition in the present, the correct form for the verb to be in the if0clause is were, no matter what the subject is.

-If she were easier to get along with, she would have more friends.

  • For an unreal condition in the past, the verb in the if-clause is in the past perfect tense, while the verb in the result clause is would have or could have plus the past participle of the verb.

The Arsenio Buck Foundation: Protect Children In Southeast Asia + Giving Speeches In Impoverished Communities In America

All right, I’ve had enough with seeing old foreigners take advantage of slum kids.  The fact that I was just at work last Friday, looking at a completely disoriented foreigner with goggles on his face kissing a 16-year-old student without anyone speaking up is appalling.  Do immigration officers, police, or security guards even approach the couple? Of course not.  It’s a shoulder shrug and, “don’t worry; white man have good intentions” saying in Thai.

I spoke up about it with an employees and her body language explains the problem of why this country’s children are suffering from insidious foreigners.

So, Arsenio….what are you going to do? I’ve heard you talk about this before.  It’s a bigger issue.  It’s a terminal issue.  It’s a government issue in even letting them travel outside their countries, let alone getting inside Thailand to commit sex acts against humanity.  This problem is much bigger than you.

It is.  I agree.

But looking and bearing in mind how discombobulated the school system is with educating kids on culture rather than survival skills is completely intolerable.

Intolerable.  A word that I’ve spoken extensively back in my last Chapter of Napoleon Hill’s ‘Law of Success.” This country, just like America growing tolerant of the use of guns – known as human killing machines, has a very dark, underlying problem that’s plaguing not only the current generation, but the future generations, too.

In saying that, what if I can develop a curriculum or type of conference/awareness (with another Thai actor or actress) that will bring awareness to the vice that that not only foreigners bring, but people within Thailand.  How about I go on a country tour, just as I would do in the likes of Laos, Myanmar, Indonesia, and ESPECIALLY CAMBODIA, bringing awareness, disciplinary skills in case they’re approached by particular individuals, and knowing what to do when they feel unsafe.

Developing real-life situations when students of all ages can guard themselves against predators.

Moving forward, I just don’t want to focus on the negative, but also planting ideas in the minds of our young youth around the world – saying, “hey, you can make a change by being the change.”

TOEIC Grammar: Countable & Uncountable Nouns + Articles. Podcast & YouTube Video Included

Unit 2: Countable/Uncountable Nouns + Articles

When a countable noun is singular, it is used with an indefinite article a/an; when a countable noun is plural, it ends in –(e)s.

Example: To request extra credit card for other members of your household, call our automated service line. (not correct)

A countable noun must be used with an indefinite article a/an in the singular form; otherwise it should end in –(e)s in the plural form. (card/cards)

The electronics company has recruited staff from several of its competitor. (not correct)

A plural noun must be used after such determiners as several, some, many, etc. (competitor competitors)

B. Uncountable nouns

Uncountable nouns refer to substances, concepts etc that we cannot divide into separate elements. An indefinite article a/an cannot be used with an uncountable noun. Besides, an uncountable noun in the subject position must be used with a singular verb.

Uncountable nouns are singular in form.

Example: The equipment you ordered are scheduled to be delivered on August 26. (not correct)

Because equipment is uncountable, it is singular and is used with a singular verb. (are – is)

Uncountable nouns cannot be used with an indefinite article a/an.

Example: They helped needy people by the provision of a clothing, food, and shelter. (not correct)

Uncountable nouns cannot be used with an indefinite article a/an. (a clothing)

Uncountable nouns that frequently occur in the TOEIC test

advertising, equipment, information, pollution, traffic, advice

furniture, machinery, recreation, luggage/baggage

clothing, knowledge, homework, merchandise, money, stationery, scenery, fun, employment, leisure.

Lewis Howes: The Sexual Mask – Introduction

Around Sukhumvit Soi 4 there are a number of stands selling bootlegged electronics, clothes, and even sexual toys.  On these dilapidated sidewalks are hundreds of sex tourists stalking out their prey.  Sadly enough, their prey are just next to these stands – small bars with music and about three girls wearing very little and shaking their boobs, lunging out trying to grab their potential customers’ hands.

There are alleys, side-streets, bars, clubs, and everything else that applies that fulfils the needs of these men who have come from all parts of the world to deep-dive into a sexual trance.

Welcome to my world.

Is all of Thailand like this? No. There are gorgeous, poshy areas just up the road; and there are some excellent business districts where working class Thais live.  However, from where I work now, to the individual I ran into just a couple weeks ago talking about: “hey, I had sex with this girl and that girl — oh, wait, my girlfriend is calling me.”  This is what drives most foreign men to insanity — the constant need of sexual fulfillment.

Lewis Howes talked about a man named Neil Strauss in his book.  This is an individual who created a book in terms of becoming a “pick-up artist.”  He was, and probably continues to be that master.  He found himself in the middle of a “free-for-all” sex party in the heart of Paris.  A woman approached him and said, “I just want ________ in me.”

Neil went on to quote with Lewis Howes: This is the kind of woman I fantasized about as a teenager: an indiscriminate one. And more than anything I’ve experienced so far, this seems like free sex—because there’s no spiritual baggage, drug baggage, or even much relationship baggage around it. In fact, there’s no baggage or encumbrances whatsoever, just randomly intersecting body parts.”

That was the beginning of his downfall.  What he thought was going to be a utopia in the states after coming back – turned into a nightmare with three jealous ex’s.

“When Neil began writing The Game, he was, by his own admission, a sexual amateur. Worse than that, he was what he calls an AFC (average frustrated chump). The story is his introduction to the secret society of “pickup artists”—men who make finding and sleeping with lots of women their primary purpose in life, like a game. Strauss told his editor that he wanted to write about this community because it was interesting. In reality, he was tired of being alone and feeling like a loser. At one sad point in his life, Neil had even considered finding a mail-order bride. He tells the story of having been on the road with the band Mötley Crüe for a book he was writing and not even getting a kiss from a single girl. By almost every definition of what it means to be a “man” in America, Neil felt like a failure and was less than guys who were having lots of sex.”

Excerpt From: Lewis Howes. “The Mask of Masculinity.” iBooks.

And this is what I see everyday of my life here in Thailand.  Is it the ultra-successful group I’m engaged in at my gym? No, but I used to be a part of a relationships where one of my colleagues would invent lies about him sleeping with dozens of women per week while having a wife – or was it?

It’s like what I see now.  Several months ago I saw an anglo-foreigner holding hands with a 20 year old university student while all Thais watched, aghast. Just two months ago I saw what a appeared to be a 70-year-old homeless man, his 45-year-old son, and a 15-year-old girl in a restaurant.  I was flabbergasted at the fact that Thais thought it was normal, but what I was witnessing was two older men touching a girl and scooting even closer to her in the horseshoe-type sitting area.

This is what makes me furious.  From the men that come here to buy/marry a wife, to one’s who come here to engage in pedaphilia….because they’re “anglo,” it’s still considered “ok.”

And, then, when Arsenio Buck applies for jobs online, they quickly ask for a photo to see the complexion of my skin, resulting in a quick decision not to hire me because I’m colored.

Going back to Neil Strauss’ Story.  Men think sleeping with a number of women at the same time is considered to be “cool.”  Neil Strauss slept with scores of women, as most 25-30-year-old anglo men would do here in Thailand, and became the number one pick-up guy in the world.

Is that a nice title to have?

Lewis Howes says, “you might think that you want that, but you’re wrong.”

Podcast Through The Years

Man, I looked back on some photos over the past 1.5 years in my phone, and I couldn’t help but notice an amazing trend.  After the first six months of my podcast, I had only accumulated just under 1800 plays.  A year and a few months later, I’ve amassed a whopping 24k plays + downloads from so many different countries around the world.  Here are some photos and a podcast on my journey.

The trials and tribulations I had to endure on the way were insane.  At my job, during the month of July (when my plays sparked dramatically), the majority of the teachers were listening to my podcast to infer and implicate who I MAY have been talking about.  I got a lot of s*** for it, threatened, warned, and the teachers began to hate my guts (can’t handle the truth).  Teachers would walk by stepping on my shoe without apologizing, chatter on so many different levels about who I am and how come I have so much work – all this culminated into the biggest success EVER in the history of my life.  How? I never gave up!

Free-writing & Free-speaking Topics For ESL Students (Downloadable PDF)

Freewriting Topics

FINALLY! Thanks to my man on instagram, I’ve been shown the way to upload PDF’s on blogs for my students, which means there’s a lot of content that’s coming soon for all my South-Eastern Asia seaboard students.

In Asia, ideas aren’t developed as compared to the western world.  Let me give you an example – noise pollution is just as bad as visual pollution.  To what extent do you agree?

In Thailand, my students wouldn’t have an idea, although the visual and noise pollution is some of the worst in Asia.

Well, with the link above, you can download the PDF, print it, and do some free writing every morning to develop not only your writing, but your speaking, too.

This is wonderful for a lot of students who are trying to achieve high marks in their IELTS Writing Task 2’s.

Nonetheless, if you guys have any comments or recommendations, please feel free to shoot them my way.  I’ll be more than happy to answer any and stay informed by following my blog when more content is available!
